Separating Boxed Wine Technology from its Contents

Some traditions and old ways of doing things are worth continuing, and others are not.
The glass wine bottle with cork closure is late 18th century technology. Glass wine bottles are expensive to produce, only 93% reliable when sealed with cork, expensive to transport due to their weight and the amount of space they take up and only 15% are recycled so they contribute to our growing landfill problems. And once opened and partially emptied, the remaining wine rapidly oxidizes in a couple of days.
Just like how the Minivan replaced the Station Wagon, Wireless replaced the Hard Line, Google replaced the Encyclopedia Britannica and the iPod replaced the Walkman, Boxed Wine will replace Bottled Wine. Like all of the aforementioned innovations, it simply does a better job at what it’s designed to do. And in the case of boxed wine, for significantly less money.
Boxed wines have received a bad rap here in the U.S. for many years. They’ve been around since the 1970s but, until recently, have only been filled with cheap, generic bulk wines that cater to a specific segment of the wine-drinking population.
The numerous benefits of boxed wine have been overshadowed by the limited appeal of the typical contents of the box, which is wrong. It is like saying your friend’s iPod isn’t superior to your Walkman because it doesn’t have your favorite music loaded onto it. It’s not the iPod that’s at fault, but the music loaded onto it.
Our goal is to make premium and ultra-premium wine accessible to all by taking advantage of the many cost efficiencies of boxed wine. Wine can be special, a reflection of the winemakers’ passion and skill, and great wine doesn’t have to be expensive. We’ve tracked down wines of authenticity and quality that over-deliver on value to share with you. We’ve done the work for you – the searching, tasting and haggling – to bring you the absolute best wine values available in the U.S.
Drinking wine should be fun – not stuffy or complicated. Tasting is believing.
